KS1

Year 1 and 2 are the Key Stage 1 classes. In KS1 Numeracy and Literacy are

priorities at this early Primary stage, though Science, Arts, Humanities and PE 

contribute to the diverse and lively curriculum.

The children also enjoy a weekly STEM session which involves learning through

experimentation, review and trying again. With many fascinating resources and

activities, this is often the high-light of their week!

From Year 1 the children are generally ready to read simple books, using the

popular Oxford Reading Tree scheme as well as Usborne, Bug Club and World

Readers for a broader approach.

For those with English as a Second Language (ESL) we provide extra tuition to

help them catch up and progress smoothly in all aspects of their learning.

KS2 + KS3

Year 3-6 form the Key Stage 2 section, or upper Primary.

Years, 7, 8 and 9 form the Key Stage 3 section, or lower secondary.

In both KS2 and 3 learning is still broad, inspiring and as practical as possible.

French is introduced as an option and Kiswahili is still widely used and taught
both through 'Jumatano' day, when all lessons are taught in Kiswahili (as much as possible).

and more formal Swahili lessons, as well as with wonderful Kiswahili drama presentations.

At Kivukoni we are very aware that children all learn at a different pace and

respond to different teaching styles. We do our best to respond to the unique

qualities of your child by being committed to small sized classes,

differentiated activities, and putting no stress on class 'positions'. 

We have a wide range of abilities, with some fantastically high achievers in all areas.

 We welcome children with Special Educational Needs, at a small additional cost, or with their own carer as necessary.

More about the general curriculum

Science

Science is taught throughout the school, where students are encouraged to be curious, and think scientifically about things, as well as take part in and analyse experiments. From planting and growing vegetables  to creating solar cars, science is very much alive at Kivukoni.

We also like to involve parents who are scientists to add engaging dimensions to our science program. 

Arts

Arts includes the creative side of education; handicraft and painting for example, but also design and technology, drama and music. We have a devoted Arts teacher, who produces amazing work with the children covering different techniques and topics.

Music

Music is enjoyed both with singing and percussion activities, and the children are also introduced to music theory through playing the recorder. This not only makes it easier for them to take up any instrument at any time in future, but also enhances literacy and creative skills generally.

Individual guitar and piano lessons are also available from music specialists once a week.

Humanities

Humanities includes Geography, History, Religious Education and PSHE and is often taught through the topic or theme that each class is working on per term. Making the children aware of the beautiful wider world they live in and exploring different ways how and places where one could live is an inspiring adventure for the children, igniting their natural curiosity.

Physical Education (PE)

PE lessons are build up from 3 main activities: ball skills, dance and gymnastics. The indoor sessions in the hall focus on developing coordination as well as team spirit, working towards a goal and core stability within the body, all in a playful way using games to challenge the children. In the afternoons there are sports sessions out in the field, focussing on: ball skills or athletics for Year 1 and 2 or cricket and rounders in term 1, hockey and athletics in term 2 and football and netball in term 3 from Year 3 upwards.

Swimming

Swimming lessons take place each week per class, with trained coaches and life-guards. This happens from as early as FS1, to promote water confidence through play. When the children are ready they start working on basic strokes and techniques, which they will keep developing till Year 8.  

Kivukoni School has its own swimming team who are frequently adorned with medals, and our Creek Club partners offers private lessons for all levels to further enhance their swimming.

Computing

The Computer Lab, complete with 18 desktops, projectors and programs enabling pupils to learn all about computing, IT and programming, is a hive of activity and buzzing minds. The children enjoy linking their class and topic work with the wide world of IT. They are proud to give Powerpoint Presentations to their parents demonstrating their achievements and we hope that many will have the chance to put their skills to use at home as well. From Year 2 onwards we teach and encourage the use of 'touch typing' as there is no doubt that computer literacy is an essential skill to all these young pupils.  
Online Abacus maths activities and challenges are also a weekly part of the schedule, which the children greatly enjoy, both at home and school.

We are now proud members of this reliable and safe internet research site, which offers so much more than just facts!  It allows children to research both at school and home efficiently and effectively, and without the dangers of the broader, unlimited sites.

Out of school learning

All classes go on educational field trips, some of which are residential in KS2 and 3. We try and relate the trips to the topics or projects as much as we can; visiting a Fire station when learning about 'Fire' or going snorkeling on the coral reefs when learning about 'Oceans and Seas' for example.  School trips are a certain highlight for most of the children each year; it is wonderful how inspired they are by the broad range of places and activities available to us, and how much they grow with each new challenge.
